General Motors has announced plans to drastically reduce the number of engines and platforms they develop in an attempt to reduce costs and complexity.
GM’s senior vice president of global product development, Mary Barra said, the company plans to reduce the number of global platforms cut from 30, in 2010, to just 14 in 2018. Likewise, the number of global engines will be reduced to fewer than 10 in 2018.
GM estimates that the changes will reduce annual costs caused by cancelled programs or last-minute changes to products by $1 billion annually.
