Previewed by numerous concepts over the past few years, the up! is a small city car measuring just 3.54 m long, 1.64 m wide and 1.48 m tall with a wheelbase of 2.42 m. Boot space is 251-liter while with the rear seats folded down, total cargo space is 951-liter.
“If the goal is to maximise space, the ideal form for a small car would be a rectangular box. In the up we were able to sculpt such a box with a clean and powerful design that does not lose sight of space utilization,” said Klaus Bischoff, Head of Design for the Volkswagen Brand.
Power comes from a new 1.0-liter three-cylinder gasoline engine with 60 hp or 75 hp. When opted with VW's BlueMotion Technology (including a stop/start system), fuel economy will be 4.2-liter/100 km and 4.3-liter/100 km. A natural-gas engine will also follow later on offering 68 bhp.
The up! is offered with an optional City Emergency Braking - a smart system that that operates automatically at speeds under 30 km/h (18 mph) which can detect an impending collision and apply the brakes automatically.
The up! goes on sale in Germany in December.
